TTC After Miscarriage – When You Become Pregnant

Once the decision of TTC after miscarriage has been made, most women get pregnant again within a year.  It is important to keep in mind that it is perfectly normal to still feel grief and emotion during the new pregnancy.  While the experience of being pregnant again can evoke strong feelings, and in some cases fear or negative emotion, it is important to keep your outlook as positive as you possibly can.  Maintaining emotional balance and wellbeing as much as possible will have positive effects on your physical health.  If you are struggling with emotional stress, grief, or anxiety when you become pregnant after miscarriage, try to keep the following in mind:

  • Each pregnancy is different, and every baby unique
  • Prepare yourself for conception with a healthy diet and exercise regime that will improve your fertility, and the health of your pregnancy
  • Seek out comprehensive prenatal care as soon as you discover that you are pregnant
  • Get all of your questions answered by your doctor, midwife or fertility specialist and do your own research about pregnancy – being really well informed will help to put your mind at rest and lower stress levels
  • Acknowledge that your new pregnancy will bring you emotional and physical challenges, the hardest of which will be dealing with the experience of your miscarriage
  • Get yourself a support network, starting with you and your partner, branch out together to talk to other couples who have had similar experiences, talk with supportive family and friends.  Try to find people that want to work through the traumatic experience of the miscarriage with you and help you past the experience.
  • Talk with your partner, doctor and support network about your fears and concerns – keeping the lines of communication open will ensure that you are getting the support you need.
  • Remember,  even when you feel at your most isolated, that there are millions of other women around the world that have gone through the same experience as you, and many of them have triumphed over the difficulties of TTC after miscarriage

Only you can decide when the time is right for you to TTC after miscarriage.  Each and every couple has a different experience.  Don’t rush into trying to get pregnant too quickly, especially if you are not physically prepared for another pregnancy.  Give yourself and your partner plenty of time to work through your grief and emotions.  Get yourself into excellent pre-conception health with the correct diet and exercise, and avoid harmful or detrimental substances that could have negative effects on your fertility.  Ensuring that you are preparing yourself physically and emotionally for pregnancy, is the best way of TTC after miscarriage.
